National TV Awards 2012: Dr Who Stars Matt Smith, Karen Gillan Take Home Top Awards

Dr Who Stars Steal Awards Night

Doctor Who had a cracking night at the National Television Awards, with Karen Gillan taking home the prize for Best Drama Performance - Female, with Matt Smith following her only minutes later in the male category.

This was a particularly poignant award for Gillan, as her character Amy Pond is due to be killed off in the next series - in "heartbreaking fashion" is all writer Steven Moffat will tell us.

However, Gillan is already moving on. She plays 1960s iconic model Jean Shrimpton in Thursday's docu-drama telling the story of her trip to New York in 1962 and love affair with photographer David Bailey.

Matt Smith has confirmed he'll be the doctor for a while yet.

But Dr Who lost out to - guess what - Downton Abbey in the category for Best Drama.
