Sainsbury's Letter 'Tiger Bread Giraffe Bread' Makes Lily Robinson And Chris King Internet Sensations

'Tiger Bread Should Be Called Giraffe Bread': Supermarket May Grant Three-Year-Old's Wish

A letter from a three-year-old asking a supermarket why tiger bread isn't called giraffe bread has resurfaced online and made the author and the responder internet stars.

Lily Robinson, who is "age three and a half" wrote to Sainsbury's last May, even drawing a picture of her imaginary dog Beaky at the bottom.

"Dear Sainsssssssssssssssssssbbbbbbbbbbbburyyys,

Why is tiger bread c/alled tiger bread?" she asks.

"It should be c/alled giraffe bread.

Love from Lily Robinson age 3 1/2"

The letter, addressed to Sainsbury's Supermarkets, reached the customer service department, from where employee Chris King responded.

"Thanks so much for your letter," he wrote last June.

"I think renaming tiger bread giraffe bread is a brilliant idea - it looks much more like the blotches on a giraffe than the stripes on a tiger, doesn't it?"

King then explains the reason behind naming the bread so was because the first baker who made it a "looong time ago thought it looked stripey like a tiger.

"Maybe they were a bit silly."

King encloses a £3 gift card for the store and signs the letter "Chris King (age 27 & 1/3)

Despite being more than seven months old, the story has been resurrected and has had more than 14,000 "shares" on Facebook in recent days.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury's said although the store receives numerous letters, it was the only one to go viral "to such a great extent".

"We take all our customers' feedback very seriously but our employees can have some fun occasionally."

Lily, who was four in November, put the money towards a comic book. Her mother Lucy, who documented the story on her blog, told the Huffington Post UK Lily is still "very excited that her letter is on the internet, but is more interested in nursery, her imaginary friends and reading."

King has since gone back to university. He told the Huffington Post UK he thought the publicity was "absolutely crazy but in the nicest possible way".

"People have gotten in touch from all over the world to say how nice it was, it's been overwhelmingly positive. I even got a handwritten thank you card from an anonymous lady in the States - and a couple of marriage proposals!

"It's great to know that it's put a smile on so many people's faces, it was just a daft wee thing I did as I wanted to make sure this wee girl, who'd done brilliantly typing up her letter, got a nice reply.

"I'm now studying primary teaching, which is why I left, which usually makes people laugh if they know about the letter."

And as for the tiger bread?

A source said Sainsbury's is in discussion with its bakery to see if the popular loaf could be renamed giraffe bread nationwide.
