A transgender man has allegedly become the first British ‘male mother’ after giving birth, despite having a sex change.
According to a transgender support group, the Beaumont Society, the unnamed man, who was born a woman but lives as a transgendered man, is thought to have given birth to a son last year.
Following the famously documented pregnancy of Thomas Beattie, an American transgender man born a woman, in 2008 and Scott Moore from California, in 2010, the latest ‘pregnant man’ news is believed to be a UK first.
The news came to light after a spokesperson from the support group revealed that a man had approached them seeking advice about having a baby.
Joanna Darrell, from the Beaumont Society said, as reported by the Press Association: “The society, all it does is provide information and acts as an information hub for people to find data about specific things, and we are able to refer them to more specialist organisations."
The charity referred the man to a company called Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES), which is a charity that provides advice and information on gender identity and intersex issues.
Although the charities deal with all types of inquiries, the spokesperson admitted that this case was indeed unusual. "This is probably unique, in the two years that I have been a member of the society, this is the only one that I have been able to refer on," added Darrell.
The charity spokesperson added that the man later got back in touch to reveal that he’d given birth and thanked them for their help.
The unnamed man would have kept his female reproductive organs instead of opting for a full gender reassignment operation. To live and look like a man, the person would have to take daily testosterone injections.
However, in order to fall pregnant and retain his female sex organs, he would have needed to lower the testosterone jabs and instead have extra oestrogen hormones implanted to kick-start the menstrual cycle in order to ovulate and conceive.
