The Sony PlayStation Vita launched in London last night, with scores of gamers streaming into the Oxford Street Game store for the midnight release.

Events across Europe ran in tandem, following an earlier PS Vita launch event in Sydney, where they are 11 hours ahead.

The London launch featured a special guest, WipeOut champion and CosPlay fanatic Ami Ledger, dressed as a character from WipeOut2048. Karl Jones, one of the WipeOut2048 developers joined the fans to sign copies of the new game.

Zohaib Ali grabbed the first PlayStation Vita sold in the UK. As you can see, he was pretty pleased about it.

Zohaib had queued since Sunday to be first in line for the new handheld. He received a massive home cinema and plenty of free games for his patience.

Kristan Reed, editor-in-chief of Pocketgamer told The Huffington Post: "I'll freely admit that I had absolutely no interest in Vita in the lead up to launch. But once I actually played around with one in my own home, I'm completely converted. My only gripe is the ridiculous price of the memory cards - especially given how easy it is to fill them up. If Sony can fix that, it has pretty much the perfect portable gaming system. But I still need a little convincing over whether people will rush to buy £40 handheld games."
