Twelve Dead In Indian Swine Flu Outbreak

An outbreak of swine flu has led to the deaths of 12 people in India, according to the country’s health ministry.

Five people have died in the northwest state of Maharashtra, with further fatalities recorded in the states of Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

More than 120 are believed to have contracted the virus, which has killed more than 1,800 in India since 2009.

Speaking to the Press Trust of India news agency, Health Secretary PK Pradhan, said: "The health ministry is monitoring the situation and there is no cause for worry. The states where cases had been reported have been advised to step up surveillance to control the further spread of the virus."

Many of those currently infected with the H1N1 virus have been taken to hospital, and health ministry spokeswoman Shefali Saran said the situation is “under control”.

Health officials said they were unsure as to what has caused the current outbreak.
