Bad Luck Machester: Top Ten Riskiest Online Cities

Bad luck if you live in Manchester. Yours is the riskiest city to go online not just the UK, but in the whole of Europe.

A survey by online security firm Norton and research partner Sperling found that Manchester counts three times the number of spammers than London, and 25% more spam attacks than the capital.

Manchester's wealth of Wi-Fi hotspots could be partially to blame. It has three times the number of Wi-Fi hot-spots than London, though both cities have the same number of internet users and household computers.

Since the capital has the same level of internet use, the survey suggests that Londoners take more care to dodge spam.

Dubliners were found to be low level users of smartphones, but unfortunately had average numbers of cybercrime.

Marian Merritt from Norton online security said in a statement: "With the explosion of smartphones, tablets and laptops in recent years and the rise of apps and social networking sites, our online and offline lives are blending together in ways that we’ve never before experienced. While there are many positive aspects as a result, this analysis highlights the potentially risky factors we face each time we go online."

To protect themselves, web users should be extra careful when they use Wi-Fi hotspots, avoiding online purchases or banking from a laptop, tablet or smartphone on un-secure connections.

Complex passwords, and different passwords for each site, may be a no-brainer, but it's a simple trick most people could improve on.
