Liverpool Sack Director Of Football Damien Comolli But Kenny Dalglish Remains At Anfield

Kop That - Comolli Sacked By Reds

Liverpool have sacked Director of Football Damien Comolli.

Comolli joined Liverpool in November 2010 as Director of Football Strategy at the Anfield club, before he was upgraded to football director in March 2011.

Comolli said in a statement: "I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to work at Liverpool and am happy to move on from the Club and back to France for family reasons. I wish the Club all the best for the future."

Club owner John Henry added: "We are grateful for all of Damien's efforts on behalf of Liverpool and wish him all the best for the future."

He is responsible for the £57m January 2011 double swoop for Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, and leaves behind a brief and smarting legacy at Liverpool.

Along with manager Kenny Dalglish, the club has spent £114.2m on seven players, with most underperforming. The sacrificial lamb during a disastrous league campaign which sees the Reds in eighth place, Dalglish nevertheless is just as culpable for an inflated summer splurge.

Thirty-nine-year-old Comolli also personally rang Manchester City to enquire whether they were interested in signing Carroll, signed for £35m 15 months ago, in a swap deal for Carlos Tevez in January this year.

And Comolli commented less than two months ago how he hoped the Reds would attract major players in the summer after their League Cup win.

"We already know that there are big players who want to join us next summer because they believe in the project," he told Sky Sports.

"Everybody in Europe knows what Liverpool football club are trying to do. A lot players I know are very interested about joining the project because it's a very interesting project."

Manager Dalglish said "it is sad to see him leave the football club" at his FA Cup semi-final press conference today.

Liverpool face Everton in the last four of the competition on Saturday at Wembley.
