The relationship between mental health and artistic creativity has long been a subject of debate.

From Picasso's 'blue period' to Tracey Emin's unmade bed, the manifestations of depression have been evident in the work of some of the most prominent and celebrated artists in history.

But then with one in five people in the UK suffering from depression at some time in their lives, it’s not surprising that some of the world's greatest painters, sculptors and illustrators have also been affected.

To coincide with Depression Awareness Week, here are 11 immense artistic talents who not only suffered from depression, but in some cases, found it steering their creativity.
