Human Remains Found By Rail Line

Detectives are investigating after suspected human remains were found near a railway line.

A skull and other bones were discovered by workers clearing undergrowth near the tracks in Herne Bay, Kent, just after 4pm yesterday, British Transport Police (BTP) said.

Inquiries are being carried out to identify the remains and to determine the cause of death.

A BTP spokesman said today: "Officers were called to the line near to Margate Road and Reculver Road in Herne Bay at 4.07pm on Monday April 30 after workers clearing undergrowth near the tracks discovered what are thought to be human remains.

"The incident is currently being treated as unexplained and the location of the discovery is being treated as a crime scene.

"Detectives are currently working to establish the full circumstances and are working with a Home Office pathologist and a forensic anthropologist in an attempt to identify the individual, including determining their gender."

House-to-house inquiries were being carried out and officers have appealed for anyone with information to call the BTP on 0800 405040.
