Ofcom Should Speed Up Murdoch Investigation, Says Miliband (LISTEN)

Miliband: Ofcom Should Investigate Murdoch Quicker (LISTEN)

The media regulator Ofcom should speech up its investigation into whether Rupert Murdoch is "fit" to hold a broadcasting licence in the UK, according to Ed Miliband.

"I think Ofcom needs to add urgency to its investigation," the Labour leader said on Wednesday. "This is now a matter for the regulator. We know there was very serious wrongdoing at News International, the regulator will now look at it".

Miliband's call comes after the Commons culture committee condemned Murdoch as not "fit" to run a major international corporation in their report.

Some have argued that the committee's conclusions were undermined by division among members.

A spokesman for Ofcom said the regulator will not be "rushed into a knee-jerk reaction". The investigation is reportedly still at the evidence gathering stage.

Miliband refused to say what sanctions MPs should consider imposing on News International executives for misleading Parliament.

"I think that is a matter for Parliament and for the select committee to make its recommendations. the most important thing in all this is that people take responsibility".

The committee's difference of opinion over parts of its report was played down by the Labour leader.

"Select committees have for a long time split on party lines on a number of issues. What is good about the committee report is it has set a clear number of conclusions about what went on at News International" he said.
