The British Open is one of the highlights of the sporting summer calendar, with Royal Lytham & St Annes playing host to the major in 2012.

Between 19-22 July the world's finest golfers will flock to the north-west coast for the first time since 2001, when the man in black, David Duval, won his only major to date.

With under two months until the tournament starts, here are some of the competition's most memorable moments:

TOM WATSON AND JACK NICKLAUS' "DUEL IN THE SUN", TURNBERRY (1977)

SEVE BALLESTEROS, ST ANDREWS (1984)

PAUL LAWRIE AND JEAN VAN DE VELDE'S "CARNAGE AT CARNOUSTIE", 1999

PADRAIG HARRINGTON, ROYAL BIRKDALE (2008)

MIGUEL ANGEL JIMINEZ, ST ANDREWS (2010)

DARREN CLARKE, ROYAL ST GEORGE'S (2011)
