Friday

The Great British Story: A People's History - BBC2, 9pm

Michael Wood's history of Britain delves into the Black Death as it reaches the 14th century. It then goes on to look at the rise of a new middle class in the 15th century, as Michael visits the oldest primary school in Britain - which dates from 1437 - to find out how education played a major role in people's changing fortunes.

It's like a history class without the grating sound of chalk on the blackboard.

Episodes - BBC2, 10pm

Merc wants Matt to get one of his former Friends cast members to make a guest appearance in a bid to boost the ratings - but will any of them take up the challenge? There's also some speechwriting for a Man of the Year event. James Purefoy guest stars.

Saturday

Primeval - ITV, 6pm

The much-loved sci-fi adventure starring Hannah from S Club 7 returns. Lester hears reports that a man has been dragged into a huge hole in the ground, so the team heads out to investigate and soon comes face-to-face with a giant burrowing insect - and more than one member of the gang is put in danger as the battle commences. With the new series comes a new lab assistant - but is there more to her than meets the eye?

Smash -Sky Atlantic, 9pm

Time for some Marilyn Monroe showtunes. The adult version of Glee continues as Eileen insists on getting the production back on track by finding a big name for the starring role and Ivy's desperation puts her entire career at risk.

Sunday

True Love - BBC1, 10.25pm

Doctor Who stars David Tennant and Billie Piper are reunited in this drama serial being shown over the next four nights (although not in this first episode).

Episode one focuses on Tennant, who plays Nick, a happily married man with children who is forced to question everything after the appearance of his first love from years.

Downton Abbey's Anna, Joanne Froggatt, and This Is England's Vicky McClure co-star.

Each episode is titled by the lead character's name - the person whose love life the story focuses on. Piper stars in episode three as Holly, a young unfulfilled teacher who is in an unsatisfactory relationship with a married man. She suddenly finds herself drawn to one of her female pupils, who appears to feel the same way.

Plan B, Leona and Labrinth: Project Hackney - BBC3, 9pm

Three young musical stars from east London challenge underprivileged kids to stage a music event. Rapper Plan B returns to his former school with singers Leona Lewis and Labrinth to explore how inner-city life can affect opportunities for young people, and how important family, diversity and neighbourhoods are in the Olympic boroughs.
