Mozilla Announces Firefox OS To Compete With Android At The Low-End

Firefox OS To Take On Android

Mozilla, the foundation behind the open-source browser Firefox, have announced that several new carriers and handset makers are on board with its attempt to create a new, low-end competitor to Android.

They have also announced it has a new name: Firefox OS.

Mozilla said that ZTE and TCL Communication Technology would make phones for the new operating system, under the Alcatel One Touch brand.

Carriers including Telefonica (O2), Spring, Deutsche Telekom, Smart, Telecom Italia and Telenor will also work to released devices with the new OS in 2013.

Mozilla had announced the operating system at Mobile World Congress, but then it was named 'Boot To Gecko'.

Like Android, the base of Firefox OS will be Linux, but the apps themselves will run on top of Firefox's browser.

Mozilla is aiming for the OS to find a home on low-cost devices.

Mozilla Chief Executive Gary Kovacs said:

"Mozilla's OS for mobile devices will help deliver on our mission to offer advanced Web technologies that eliminate roadblocks for users and developers.

"It will also help Mozilla to democratise smartphone experiences to the billions of internet users expected to come online for the first time through mobile in the coming years.

"The large number of operators and manufacturers now supporting this effort will bring additional resources and welcome diversity to our global offerings."
