Charles And Diana's Wedding Toast To Go Up For Auction

Crumbs! Charles And Diana Wedding Toast To Fetch Hundreds At Auction

A piece of toast from the buttery batch served to Prince Charles on the day he married Lady Diana Spencer is set to make bread history when it goes to auction.

Bidders will need to be rolling in it to buy this "upper crust" from auctioneers Hansons in Derbyshire, with the royal relic going on sale expected to fetch as much as £500 on 19 July.

Prince Charles' maidservant snuck out the toast on the morning of the ill-fated wedding, after spotting the groom's breakfast leftovers.

Although protocol means she can't talk about her time with the royals, her mother, Rosemarie Smith, described the moment 31 years ago.

"I was with her in the corridor" the 83-year-old told Hansons.

"I saw that Prince Charles had left some toast on the tray. I had been thinking about a keepsake from the wedding and saw the toast and thought to myself: 'Why not'?"

The preserved piece of history sat on her mantle piece in a Royal Crown Derby cup from that moment on, the maidservant's mother said.

Auctioneer Charles Hanson added: "If only the toast could talk! I suspect Prince Charles was a little nervous on the morning of the big day and this little piece of toast survived!"

"It could do quite well! We hope worldwide collectors will appreciate this little bygone of Royalist history."

Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer on 29 July 1981. Pictures of their wedding are some of the most iconic of the decade. Take a walk down memory lane below.
