Microsoft Surface To Cost More Than £1,000?

Microsoft's Surface tablet received a positive reaction when it was unveiled last month - but according to one report it may have priced itself out of the market.

The company did not reveal the cost or exact release date for the Windows 8 devices when they were announced.

The most expensive model of the Surface costs around £1,500, according to the prices spotted by CNet.

Those prices - if confirmed, which they have not been - would make even the entry-level Windows RT tablet far more expensive than Apple's iPad.

The Pro version of the Windows 8 machine is being positioned as a laptop replacement rather than an iPad-like tablet, and so was expected to cost more than its rival - but even then it would be expensive at these prices.

Microsoft said in a statement:

"'Suggested retail pricing will be announced closer to availability and is expected to be competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel ultrabook-class PC. OEMs will have cost and feature parity on Windows 8 and Windows RT."
