How? England Move Up To Third In FIFA Rankings

England have been preposterously ranked as officially the third best team in the world by Fifa.

Roy Hodgson's squad have moved up a place since 4 July, when shortly after the European Championship they propelled up to fourth.

The rankings, which have long been criticised for their detachment from reality, list reigning European and world champions Spain top, with Germany in second place.

Hodgson's side lost at the quarter-final stage of the European Championship and played out four games of uninspiring football in Ukraine and Poland, winning twice.

Uruguay, 2011 Copa América winners, sit below England in fourth now, while Portugal (fifth), Italy (sixth) and Argentina (seventh) remain in their respective berths behind the Three Lions.

Holland, Croatia and Denmark continue to make up the remainder of the top 10.

The Republic of Ireland's disastrous Euro 2012 showing - in which they lost all three games and conceded nine goals - sees them remain in 26th.

Scotland have moved up three places to 46, while Wales and Northern Ireland are up one to 37th and 101st respectively.

Brazil, who will host the 2014 World Cup and are favourites to win the Olympics, have fallen down two places to 13th.
