Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger Admits Alex Song Could Leave

Wenger Says Song Could Go Too

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has conceded midfielder Alexandre Song could follow Robin van Persie out of the club before the transfer window closes.

Barcelona have reportedly offered £12m for the Cameroon international, whose contract runs out in 2014.

Wenger, when pressed on the matter of Song leaving and whether the Gunners could make more signings, said: "Both can happen."

"Players will come and go before the end of the transfer window," he openly admitted. "We have six or seven players in midfield, and we have much more freedom to make decisions."

The Frenchman was speaking at his pre-match press conference for the Premier League season opener against Sunderland, where he also revealed he was "following" Nuri Sahin, the Real Madrid playmaker.

Van Persie's departure appears to have finally signalled the penny dropping at the Emirates. Whereas Samir Nasri and Van Persie left with less than a year remaining on their contracts, Song, it would appear, will be moved on quicker.

Defender Thomas Vermaelen meanwhile has been promoted to Arsenal captain as Van Persie completes his move to Manchester United while Mikel Arteta has been appointed vice-captain.

The Belgian becomes Arsenal's fifth captain since Patrick Vieiera left the club in 2005. Thierry Henry, William Gallas, Cesc Fàbregas and Van Persie have all skippered but left in the seven years since.

Wenger however encouraged other squad members to act as leaders, as he optimistically suggested the squad has "many potential captains".

Aaron Ramsey, Park Chu-Young, Tomas Rošicky and Andrey Arshavin all wear the armband for their respective countries.
