Robson Becomes First British WTA Finalist Since 1990

Laura Robson has become the first British Women's Tennis Association finalist since Jo Durie in 1990 after she defeated Sorana Cirstea at the Guangzhou International Open.

Robson, who upset seventh seed Peng Shuai in an epic contest on Thursday, beat Cistea 6-4 6-2 in China.

The Team GB silver medallist is ranked 74 in the world but her performance in the Far East could see her enter the top 50 stratosphere for the first time.

She will face Chinese native Hsieh Su-wei, who dumped out out fourth seed Urszula Radwanska of Poland 6-1 3-6 6-0, in the final. The last British woman to win a WTA singles title was Sara Gomer in July 1988 in Aptos, California.

Eighteen-year-old Robson was in impressive form at this month's US Open, when she reached the fourth round having defeated Kim Clijsters and Li Na.

Londoner Robson took silver at the London 2012 Olympics in the mixed doubles with recent US Open champion Andy Murray.
