On this momentous day in 1886 the dinner jacket made its debut in the US when New York millionaire James Potter donned the suit for an outing at the Tuxedo Park Club.
Wearing it well: Princess Diana, Sid James and Daniel Craig
Legend has it Potter’s garb was the result of some sartorial advice from the then Prince of Wales (later Edward VII), who had hosted the visiting American at Sandringham House, his Norfolk hunting estate.
