This week Channel 4 launched its new series Jewish Mum of the Year, in which eight formidable mothers from the Jewish community compete to show who is the ultimate in hen-pecking. Their first task was to team up to put on a bar mitzvah party 'for a small gathering of 200'.

All the clichés were out in force - there was Emma, the bitchy princess, and Ruth, the humourless religious one, Lesley, who can't cook but can shop, and Sandi, the glamorous granny who knows it all.
