Michael Vaughan would rather remember the 2005 Ashes when he captained England to a 2-1 win on home soil but in the 2002-03 series he enjoyed one of his best knocks as a Test cricketer.

His 183 at Sydney Cricket Ground spared England a whitewash defeat Down Under as they won the final Test in January with the side's captain-in-waiting hitting his third century of the series.

His second highest score and his best against the Aussies, Vaughan, 38 today, would replace Nasser Hussain as captain later that year during the series against South Africa.

And it was there that the seeds would be sown in preparation for the 2005 hegemony and a first Ashes win since 1986-87.
