'Doctor Who' Christmas Special Prequel: Matt Smith In First Official Photo, Plus Trailer (VIDEO)

FIRST LOOK: 'Doctor Who' Christmas Special Prequel

The first photo from a prequel to this year's 'Doctor Who' Christmas special has been unveiled, showing Matt Smith in Victorian costume.

The prelude to the sci-fi drama's traditional festive episode will air on 16 November on BBC One, as part of this year's Children in Need appeal.

Other popular BBC shows, such as 'The Apprentice' and 'Strictly Come Dancing', have also filmed special sketches to raise money for the charity.

A new trailer for the Christmas day special has also been unveiled, giving viewers another glimpse at new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman.

The episode will feature guest appearances from Richard E Grant - who played the Doctor once in a 2003 animated special 'Scream of the Shalka' - as the new villain and 'Silent Witness' actor Tom Ward.

In August a show worker was seen blasting the set with a snow machine, while horses and carts and similarly-attired extras were also on hand to help transport Bristol city centre back to the 1890s for the festive episode.

Next year will mark the sci-fi show's 50th anniversary. Smith has revealed he knows what showrunner Steven Moffat is planning to mark the occasion.
