Nelson Mandela Dead: Life In Pictures Of Former South African President

Nelson Mandela has died at the age of 95 signalling the passing of one of the most remarkable lives in modern history.

Born in 1918 in the village of Mvezo in Umtatu, Mandela went on to study law at university before becoming involved in anti-colonialist politics.

His work as a lawyer led to repeated arrests. In 1962 he was convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government after a bombing campaign by the Umkhonto we Sizwe group which he co-founded.

Mandela served 27 years in prison on Robben Island before an international campaign pressured the South African government to release him.

Upon his release he went on to be elected the first ever black president of South Africa on the back of a campaign to abolish apartheid in the country.

He retired from politics in 1999.
