Azealia Banks Says Perez Hilton Homophobic Slur Storm Is 'All So Hypocritical'

'All So Hypocritical'

Azealia Banks has taken to Twitter to call people's reactions to her homophobic slur against Perez Hilton "so hypocritical".

Continuing to discuss her online spat with the celebrity blogger, in which she called him a "messy faggot" when he took the side of Angel Haze during last week's feud between the two up-and-coming rappers, she wrote:

After Hilton and other observers slammed Banks' language, the '212' rapper claimed: "A faggot is not a homosexual male. A faggot is any male who acts like a female. There's a BIG difference."

Adding: "As a bisexual person I knew what I meant when I used that word… When I said acts like a female I should've said acts like a c*nt."

One of the biggest gay advocacy organisations in the US, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (Glaad), have now condemned her use of the f-word.

"Regardless of [Azealia's] intent or her personal definition … there are gay kids who follow her on Twitter who hear this word in an entirely different context," wrote associate director Matt Kane in a statement on their website. "This word is used almost universally by bullies, often as part of a larger verbal or physical assault. This word hurts those kids, no matter what Banks meant by it."

The timing of Banks' outburst is interesting - she's currently working on her debut album, due to be released later this year. People in the music industry may know her name already, but there's nothing like a controversy to get the rest of the world talking about you too.

On Monday, Banks took to Twitter again to remark: "I've never gotten this much attention for saying nigger".

And, obviously not being muzzled by her record label (like some artists during Twitter storms), she told people to contact her to discuss the falling out, and even provided an email address: "You can email all questions, rants, complaints, and nudes to missbanks4ever@gmail.com... I will respond to all of your inquiries #discuss".

What do you make of Banks' reaction? Will you be firing off an email?
