Surfing legend Garrett McNamara may have smashed his own world record after riding the crest of a giant 100ft wave off the coast of Portugal.
The 45-year-old Hawaiian said surfing the 30m monster in Nazaré was really just like "snowboarding on giant mountains."

After hurtling at over 60mph down the giant crest, he told ABC news: "You are just going so fast it's really, really similar to snowboarding on giant mountains. And you're just chattering, flying down this bumpy, bumpy mountain, your brains are being rattled, your whole body is being rattled."

Despite McNamara being older than most champion surfers, he was the previous world record holder after riding a wave of around 90ft in 2011.

At the time, McNamara told the Observer why the bay was so perfect for surfing, saying: "There is an underwater canyon 1,000ft deep that runs from the ocean right up to the cliffs. It's like a funnel. At its ocean end it's three miles wide but narrows as it gets closer to the shore and when there is a big swell it acts like an amplifier."
