Oxford University Cheerleaders The Sirens In Pictures

Three Cheers For Oxford

It's not often you see a research biochemist balanced on top of a linguistics brainbox - unless you're watching the University of Oxford's cheerleading squad in action.

The 32-strong team has embraced the all-American sport while continuing to study at one of the most prestigious institutions in the world.

The Oxford Sirens team include a PHD biochemistry student, another striving to become a UN ambassador and a team president who harbours ambitions to develop a vaccine for malaria.

There are also more than five men on the team - including a rugby player. The team, which competes against other university teams including arch-rivals the Cambridge Cougars, believe there are too many misconceptions about cheerleading and want to change its reputation as a "bimbo's sport".
