Although no group has yet taken responsibility for the attacks, with suspicion currently falling on Al Qaida or right-wing extremist groups. President Obama has said that those responsible "will be held accountable".

Wahlberg, who unsmilingly attended the premiere of his new film 'Pain and Gain' last night, grew up in the Dorchester area of Boston, where his young adulthood was famously peppered by violence and crime before he successfully turned his life around, and became first a model, singer and later actor and successful producer.

He remains famously attached to the city and wrote on his Twitter account yesterday, "Thoughts and prayers with my hometown Boston today."

Another former local Ben Affleck was one of the first to condemn the attacks. He said on Twitter, "Such a senseless and tragic day. My family and I send our love to our beloved and resilient Boston."
