Götze Set To Join Bayern Munich In €37m Deal

One of the biggest football transfers of the year has already been completed after Borussia Dortmund confirmed playmaker Mario Götze will join Bayern Munich in a €37m deal.

While English football was concerned with Manchester United's 20th league title win, over in Germany anticipation was mounting at a midnight transfer exclusive.

Some expected it would be Bayer Leverkusen winger André Schürrle's move to Chelsea, although Bayer last week announced they were in talks with last year's Champions League winners over a possible deal last week.

Instead Bild delivered the shattering news for Dortmund fans that their prized asset was ostensibly en route to Bavaria this summer.

Bild's splash on the Götze story

The tabloid says the 20-year-old has agreed a long-term contract worth €7m a year, a €2m increase on his current Dortmund salary.

The timing is peculiar since Dortmund host Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday night in what is their first final four encounter in the competition since they bowed out to the Spaniards in 1998.

Further reports in addition to Bild's exclusive suggest the deal will be confirmed today.

The much-coveted Götze signed a new contract with BVB last year but, as is often the case, it merely signalled a stay of execution and guaranteed Dortmund would receive a higher fee when he did leave.

Götze is regarded as one of the best young attackers in Europe

Only 20-years-old, he has already won 22 caps for Germany.

Götze's seemingly inevitable departure prolongs the break-up of this vibrant Dortmund team, champions in 2011 in 2012.

Shinji Kagawa joined Manchester United last year, although their highly-rated coach Jurgen Klopp has maintained he will stay in the Bundesland until his contract expires in 2016.

Bayern, already crowned Bundesliga champions, could add the German Cup and a Champions League to complete a tremendous treble.

Götze may meet his future employers in the Champions League final at Wembley. Bayern host Barcelona this evening.

UPDATE: Dortmund have confirmed the transfer on their Facebook page.
