Google Leaks New Maps Product Ahead Of I/O?

Google appears to have leaked one of its own announcements ahead of the annual I/O conference, which starts later on Wednesday.

A redesign of Google Maps - trailed last week after screenshots were published on a tech blog - was apparently pushed live a little early.

They include the removal of the sidebar in favour of a floating "smarter" search bar.

Searches will now be tailored more to the information you need, rather than just lists of businesses.

The new maps promises deeper integration of different layers of data, including a seamless transition to a Google Earth interface.

The result - Engadget says - could be layers of information stretching "from outer space down to the streets".
