Student Musician Of The Week: York University Student Tom Hancock

Student Musician Of The Week: Tom Hancock

This week's student musician is Tom Hancock, a 21-year-old politics student at the University of York.

We sat down with Tom for a few minutes to see what inspires the songwriter.

Mr Hancock is a student at York

How long have you been playing?

I started playing guitar in August 2004 but didn't (attempt to) sing for another 3 years.

What genre of music do you play?

Alt/indie I guess. I read that Devendra Banhart describes his music as "unpopular pop-music" - I like that and might steal it.

Why did you start playing?

A difficult one. I suppose that I started playing because I wanted to be a songwriter, if I could have just created songs without any musical ability then I would have definitely taken that option.

What’s your most memorable musical moment?

(Off the top of my head) I will always remember listening to Illinois by Sufjan Stevens for the first time - the last album to truly blow me away.

What’s your dream?

To be the fifth panelist on Question Time - I can be obnoxious to all the other panelists without any repercussions as everyone goes soft on the "arty" guest.

Who’s your idol and who would you most compare yourself to? (Dead or alive...)

Elliott Smith

If you could play with anyone, who would it be?

Lou Reed

If you could play at any festival, which would it be?

Glastonbury - preferably in a tiny cafe somewhere

Who are your fans?

I have none - my mum likes a couple of my songs though

What’s your all time favourite song?

Nico - These Days (written by Jackson Browne)
