Mac OS Mavericks: Pictures, Video And Secrets Of Apple's New Mobile OS

Apple has announced an all-new generation of its OS X desktop operating system, Mac OS X.

OS X Mavericks is the first in what is planned to be a series of releases named after areas of California, "where OS X was designed".

The new OS will be released to the public in the Autumn.

Apple focused on a few key features of the new upgrade:

  • Finder Tabs - now the hard-drive searching tool can run multiple windows at once.
  • Tags - documents and files can be tagged for easier searching and sorting
  • Multiple Monitors - enhancements to how multiple monitors work with OS X, including allowing users to run the dock on multiple screens
  • Improved battery life - including 'App Nap' that closes apps in the background to extend battery life as much as possible, even when apps are just covered by other windows
  • A new version of Safari, with a reading list Sidebar, shared links and under-the-hood improvements, plus a built-in password and security app called 'iCloud Keychain'
  • Notifications - built in reply forms, integration with alerts from iOS apps, lock screen integration, background updating for apps and more
  • Calendar - an all-new Calendar app, with no virtual leather! A clean and clear design
  • Maps - the Mac will now have a built-in Maps app, with 3D flyover data, turn-by-turn directions and integration with the iPhone.
  • iBooks - the app and library will now be available for the Mac
