Microsoft has launched a version of Office for the iPhone.

The app - currently only available in the US iTunes Store (with no specific word of a UK release yet) - is virtually identical to that which is already available on Microsoft's own Windows Phone 8 platform.

Versions of Word, Excel and Powerpoint are included in the suite of apps.

"With Office 365 Home Premium and Pro Plus, we promised they'd work across all of your devices," says Julia White, marketing manager for Microsoft Office. "Now that those are out, it's time to expand think about other end points our users have said are important to them."

While the app allows users to make "quick edits" to their documents, it does not support the full functionality of desktop version of Office.

The app is free to download but requires an Office 365 subscription to run. It requires iOS 6.1 or higher, and while it's usable on the iPad it isn't currently optimised for the larger screen.

Microsoft said:

Microsoft Office Mobile is the official Office companion optimized for your iPhone. You can access, view and edit your Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint documents from virtually anywhere. Documents look like the originals, thanks to support for charts, animations, SmartArt graphics and shapes. When you make quick edits or add comments to a document, the formatting and content remain intact.
