Celebrations have taken place across South Africa and around the world to mark the 95th birthday of Nelson Mandela.

With the former leader still in a critical condition in a Pretoria hospital, Nelson Mandela Day took on a special significance.

Schoolchildren sang happy birthday, and South Africans were urged to mark his 67 years of public service with 67 minutes of charitable acts.

Mandela, who is in critical but stable condition with a recurring lung infection, entered hospital on 8 June.

President Jacob Zuma said his health was "steadily improving".

He entered hospital on June 8 with a recurring lung infection.

In a statement, Zuma said: "We thank all our people for supporting Madiba throughout the hospitalisation with undying love and compassion."

Barack and Michelle Obama released a birthday tribute, saying they would "forever draw strength and inspiration from his extraordinary example of moral courage, kindness, and humility."
