Michael Carrick is set to partner Steven Gerrard in the England midfield for their final World Cup qualifier against Poland.

Frank Lampard, who endured a frustrating night at Wembley versus Montenegro on Friday, will drop to the bench.

Carrick, arguably Manchester United's most consistent performer the last two seasons, has suffered a poor start but produced his best performance of the campaign at Sunderland 10 days ago.

Michael Carrick England caps

Tonight will be the midfielder's 31st England cap, 12-and-a-half-years on from his debut appearance in a 4-0 win over Mexico.

Carrick, 32, started one match at the 2006 World Cup in the second round win over Ecuador and was part of the 23-man squad in South Africa four years later, but didn't play.

England coach Roy Hodgson incorrectly assumed Carrick had retired from international football and didn't select him for the 2012 European Championship.
