He was taken to the Royal Derby Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Derbyshire Police said.

A spokesman for the university said it was "devastated" by the loss of Mr Bergeron.

"Chris was a second year undergraduate studying for a BSc (Hons) Computer Games Programming degree," he said.

"He was a hard-working and dedicated student who showed great enthusiasm and attitude towards his studies.

"Despite only being on the course for just over a year, his grades were indicative of his passion for game development, proving to be one of our brightest and best.

"Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends as they come to terms with this tragic event. We will continue to offer and provide support to anyone within our university community who feels that they need it."

The spokesman said the university was working with the police to provide all the assistance it could to their inquiries in order to fully understand what had happened.

Police said a file was being prepared for the coroner.
