Bristol City have become the first football club in the UK to install safe standing rail seats at their ground.

Ashton Gate will feature the seats as part of a "demonstration block" and will be used during Bristol Rugby matches.

Regulations currently prohibit them from being used during football matches, but the move is encouraging news for supporters in favour of safe standing.

The seats, popularised by German clubs, can either be locked or unlocked to create a standing or seated area inside a stadium.

Manchester United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward told a fans forum he supported the principles of safe standing last week, which will heighten the chances of a widespread return have grown.

The Football League also agreed to lobby the government to change the rules on standing areas at football matches after consultation with all their clubs.
