Barkhad Abdi, in his first film, has stolen the Best Supporting Actor BAFTA Award from an A-list field, including Bradley Cooper, Michael Fassbender, Matt Damon and Daniel Bruhl.
Barkhad Abdi, who was a chauffeur with no aspirations to act until he was cast, won his award for his role of pirate Muse in 'Captain Phillips', acting alongside Tom Hanks and being directed by Paul Greengrass.

Barkhad looked more surprised than anyone to hear he'd won, and was whistled on to the stage by a visibly moved Tom Hanks.
Barkhad took to the stage to thank "Paul Greengrass for believing in me before I believed in myself. I want to thank Tom Hanks for everything. I want to thank my family... and the other pirates in the film, my friends. We came from nothing and we got this. Thankyou.
It wasn't as lucky a night for the evening's other celebrated novice, Luptia Nyong'o, nominated for her role of persecuted slave girl in Steve McQueen's film '12 Years A Slave'.
