A student who plunged to his death from a balcony in south London is believed to have been high on hallucinogenic drugs used by Mexican shamans, an inquest heard.
Tianhong Tang, a medical student at St George's University of London, swung his legs over the side of his balcony in Tooting before losing his grip and falling to the patio area below.
His death last December was witnessed by several passers by, with one saying the student had a "glazed expression" before he lost his grip on the railings, Your Local Guardian reported.
Police officers were called to the scene and found Mr Tang lying on the floor in a pool of blood. On searching the flat, they found empty packets of legal high salvia divinorum premium mazatec, a legal high which translates as "sage of the seers". The plant, which derives from the mint family, hails from Central Mexico, where it has been used by Mazatec shamansz to facilitate visions during healing sessions for centuries.
Coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe recorded a verdict of accidental death, claiming the results make it impossible to conclude the effect of legal highs.
