WRC 2014: Kris Meeke Ready For The Unknown Of Rally Mexico

Meeke Ready For Unknown Of Rally Mexico

Kris Meeke will make his first gravel appearance of 2014 when he takes to the dusty roads of Rally Mexico on the third round of the World Rally Championship.

The event will mark Meeke's debut appearance in Mexico but the Northern Irishman is confident ahead of one of the WRC's most testing challenges.

Kris Meeke will make his debut on a second WRC event this week

With experience of gravel events behind him already including Australia, Finland and Great Britain, the Citroen driver is not daunted by the prospect of an event run at altitudes of up to 9000ft which drain the cars of power.

"Mexico requires a very different set-up from Finland and Australia," Meeke said.

"I still have some learning to do, but I’m pleased with the set-up that we found in testing. The drop in power output could be an advantage for me because I have a lot of experience of competing in cars with normally aspirated engines.

"You need a slightly different driving style and so that shouldn't be problem for me," he added.

The 34-year-old Meeke has enjoyed a promising start to this first full WRC season, taking a podium third place in Monte Carlo and 10th in Sweden, the WRC's only all-snow event and another rally where he had not competed before.

VW driver Jari-Matti Latvala goes into the event leading the points from his team-mate and reigning world champion, Sebastien Ogier. The rivalry between Latvala and the man who won nine of last year's 13 rallies will be one of the major battles of the rally which starts on Thursday and runs until Sunday.
