Supporters will argue it is bad enough board members' quotes are shoehorned into press releases confirming a new manager, but Manchester United's shirt sponsors AON surpassed that sanctimony when they posted their own greeting following Louis van Gaal's appointment on Monday.
"Aon Welcomes Louis van Gaal as New Manager of Manchester United," reads the headline. "Announcement Demonstrates Manchester United's Ability to Attract Leaders and Recruit Talent."
This is actually real, not made up.
"It is an incredible honor when someone is selected as the manager of Manchester United," bleats a man called Phil Clement. "It is the world's team in the world's game, and a brand that inspires people in every corner of the world." Pass the sick bag.
