43 Remarkable Images From Inside Guantanamo Bay Prison

These remarkable images from within the world’s most controversial prison were taken by photographer Matt Sprake, who joined reporter Sean Rayment on a recent visit to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The disturbing pictures show several inmates, all alleged terrorists, during their daily routine, as well as prison guards, eating areas, chefs and interrogation huts in Camp X-Ray.

There are 149 inmates currently in the prison, originating from 21 countries – many cleared for release but remaining incarcerated. Within the walls resides Shaker Aamer, a Saudi-born man with a British passport who was captured in Afghanistan in 2002 and cleared for release in 2007. US president Barack Obama promised to close the prison in 2008, but domestic politics has made either repatriation of the inmates or trials all but impossible. Recently five inmates of Gitmo were released in an exchange deal for US Army Sgt Bowe Bergdahl, who spent five year as a captive of the Taliban.
