Two Killed By Freight Train At Crossing 'Deliberately Stepped On Tracks'

A man in his 80s and a woman in her 70s who died after being struck by a freight train at a level crossing are thought to have deliberately stepped on the line.

The pair, from Lincolnshire, died when they were hit by the train outside Lincoln city centre shortly before 12 noon today.

The train was heading for Immingham Docks on Humberside.

British Transport Police (BTP) said the incident was reported at 11.57am and Lincolnshire Police and East Midlands Ambulance staff also attended.

A BTP spokesman said: "Our officers are continuing to investigate the incident which was reported to BTP at 11.57am and was also attended by Lincolnshire Police.

"Paramedics from the East Midlands Ambulance Service attended, and a man in his 80s and a woman in her 70s were pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are working to establish the full circumstances of the incident, which is currently being treated as non-suspicious. Family of the deceased have been informed."

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has been informed.
