Russia's New Tram Looks Like A Science-Fiction Prop

Russia's New Tram Looks Like The Future

This is Russia's new tram, and it honestly looks like something out of a science fiction film. Called the Russia One or R1 it's a state-of-the-art 'iPhone on rails'.

Designed by Russian company UVZ, the R1 has been specifically designed to showcase Russia as it will look in the next 20-50 years.

Using advanced composite materials, each panel on the R1 can be easily changed which is handy for ad campaigns and maintenance. Meanwhile the angular forward-slanting nose gives the driver better views over the tracks, avoiding possible pedestrian collisions.

Looking like a cross between a Batmobile and something out of Deus Ex, the R1 is as advanced inside as it is outside thanks to WiFi, GPS and Dynamic LED lighting which can change the interior lighting depending on the weather or the time of day.

Even the driver isn't left out with ports for charging his/her smartphone and state-of-the art controls. But let's face it -- the 'features' aren't the point here. It's all about style.

At present the futuristic-looking R1 is just a concept, however the company plans to have the tram on the rails by 2015 as a exclusive to Russia.

So while we wouldn't expect to see the R1 pulling up outside Wimbledon or Edinburgh any time soon, it certainly paints a very cool-looking picture for the future of public transport.
