Looking not unlike a giant fist had punched its way through the sky, this unusual cloud formation was a captivating sight to behold above the Australian town of Korumburra.
It's known as a fallstreak hole and occurs when the water temperature in the clouds is below freezing but the water does not immediately freeze due to a lack of ice nucleation particles.
When the ice crystals do form, they cause the water droplets around the crystals to evaporate, leaving a large “hole” in the cloud and the appearance of a rainbow.

The phenomena are also known as “hole-punch clouds”, the Cloud Appreciation Society writes.
