Coco Fennell is the woman behind her eponymous clothing line, a label that offers adorable, vintage-style pieces and the sort of clothes "you'd feel happy bumping into your ex-boyfriend in." Inspired by her retro aesthetic, we visited her dreamy Shoreditch apartment to investigate the kitsch she has picked up to decorate her living space, and to find out a little more about her.
How long have you lived here?
I moved to Brick Lane when I was about 18, to just above the bagel shop. Then, I lived in a really small studio just next door to here and, when this space came up, I got it straight away! This kind of space is so unusual in London, so I feel really lucky to have it. And then my studio is in down the road in De Beauvoir, a big shared space with florists and set designers and all sorts of other creative, which is really nice. Otherwise it can get a little isolating running your own business!
What do you like about the area?
I don't drink so I don't go out to party, but I've lived here for so long now that I've got all sorts of little bits that I love. Like, the dance classes at Frame around the corner, and there are loads of nice restaurants – Duke's is awesome, and there's an amazing fresh pasta place on Rivington Street that is so delicious. I really like living in London but my parents have a house in Berkshire that I like to go visit. It's really handy to find a balance between a town and a country feel... it can get hard to find outdoor space in the city.
How would you describe your interior style?
Like a mad child. Circusy; I basically like what a fairground would be like. My favourite interiors are probably all of the old Biba shops, because all the props in those are incredible. And God's Own Junkyard! Everything from there.
You've got so many unique bits here – where do you find it all?! Have you always been into this aesthetic?
A lot of eBay. And a lot is from the Spitalfields Antiques Market that happens on a Thursday, then Brixton market, Kempton Antiques fair... and specialist neon places! My parents quite like silly stuff, too, so I've always been into it – although their space is a bit more sparse and classic than mine. I've always like lots of books and clutter.
What's your favourite thing in the flat?
Probably all of the light fixtures – my best friend handmakes them for her company Milk Street Studios. She's awesome; she's in a band and she studied electrical engineering, and now she's doing art, so she combines all of her areas in one brand. And the lights themselves are really affordable. There's also a great guy in Brighton called Fishtail Neon who makes hand-painted neons in his workshop on the beach.
What's your biggest luxury?
Scented candles and fresh flowers! The Cire Trudon room spray is incredible – I've had it for a year and a half and use it practically every day. And every Christmas I stockpile their festive candles because they do amazing scents in beautifully coloured glass.
What do you do in your spare time?
Silly, arcade-based fun. A lot of bowling!
