Man Found Dead At Olympic Stadium

A man has been found dead at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford.

The 44-year-old man, who was working at the site, was discovered unresponsive by police at 7.30am today after reports of a person having fallen from the stadium.

Ambulances attended the scene but the man was pronounced dead shortly before 8am.

The man's death is being treated as "unexplained".

Scotland Yard has not named the man but said he was a sub contractor working at the venue.

Officers believe they know his identity and are now attempting to trace his next of kin.

The Olympic Stadium is currently being transformed into a venue for the 2015 Rugby World Cup later this year before becoming the permanent home of West Ham United Football Club from 2016.

Balfour Beatty, the construction firm managing the site, said: "We can confirm there has been a fatality at the former Olympic Stadium site this morning.

"We are working with the relevant authorities whilst a full investigation is carried out. All work on site has been stopped.

"Our thoughts are with the individual's family, friends and colleagues."

David Goldstone, chief executive of the London Legacy Development Corporation, said: "We are devastated to hear of the death at the stadium this morning and our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this time.

"As yet the exact cause of death is unexplained, but we have stopped all work on site and will cooperate fully with the emergency services and all other relevant authorities on their investigations. We will also be conducting our own thorough examination of events."
