Disney's 'Aladdin' Is Getting A New Prequel

A live-action prequel to Disney’s hit animated film ‘Aladdin’ is in the works.

The new movie will explore the backstory for the wish-granting Genie, who was voiced by the late Robin Williams in the original.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that it will reveal how the character ended up being enslaved in the lamp, while a love interest and a sorcerer for the blue-skinned character are also expected to feature.

The screenplay is being written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, with Tripp Vinson on board to produce.

Entitled ‘Genies’, the film is in the “early stages of development”, while a live-action adaptation of ‘Aladdin’ is also expected to follow.

Disney is also has live-action adaptations of ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Dumbo’, ‘Winnie the Pooh’, ‘Mulan’ and ‘Pinocchio’ currently in the pipeline.
