Hopes for a hot end to the summer have been dashed, with cool weather predicted across the UK for much of August.
The month began with the hottest July day on record, as temperatures reached 36.7C (98F) at Heathrow, but will end on a less balmy note.
Mario Cuellar, a forecaster for MeteoGroup said: "It's not going to be hot anywhere in the UK this weekend. Especially overnight, it's going to be chilly. In northern areas of Scotland, it will be in between five and eight degrees Celsius in places."
The picture looks set to improve on Monday - for East Anglia, London and Kent at least - where low pressure will create highs of 28C (82F). But the hot weather will be short-lived, with cool weather returning on Tuesday and temperatures reaching a maximum of 23C (73F) .
The forecast for August is "not much more promising", according to Mr Cuellar. Temperatures next week will be cooler than average across the UK, with some wet weather.
But bookies are slashing odds on August being the hottest on record.
Bookmaker Coral have cut the odds from 6-1 to 3-1 after a flurry of bets, and odds on 2015 being the hottest year on record remain short at 11-8.
Coral's John Hill said: "It looks like punters are optimistic that August is going to be a sizzling month, as we have already seen plenty of support on it being the hottest in history in the UK, where we have slashed the odds in half following the gamble."
