Rugby Coach Rob Walton Killed In France Sea Tragedy

Tributes have been paid to a rugby coach who died while playing in the sea on holiday with his family.

Rob Walton, from Leicestershire, died while swimming off the south-west coast of France on Monday.

It is believed he might have been body boarding when tragedy struck, according to reports in France. His death is currently being investigated by police in Labenne, near Biarritz.

Reports in the region said the father of four may have died after being hit by a freak wave which damaged his spine.

The Rugby Lions RFC paid tribute to the keen player nicknamed Yoghurt by his friends and team-mates.

"It is with great sadness to announce the death of Lions head coach and friend Rob Walton who passed away yesterday while on holiday in France with his family," the statement said..

"Yoghurt was instrumental in the rebuilding of Lions and his hard work, determination and sense of humour will be sadly missed by us all.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this sad time. He may have passed away but he will not be forgotten.

"Once a Lion, always a Lion."

Hinckley RFC said: "It is with sad regret we have to announce the death of ex-player, club member and huge character Robert Walton, who died in a beach accident in south-west France.

"The family have asked for respectful privacy for the foreseeable future. Family, friends and club are absolutely devastated.

"RIP Yoghurt.

"Our thoughts and love are with you and your family, now and in the future, Hinckley RFC."
