Behind The Scenes With Johnny Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton For 'Black Mass'

Why Benedict Cumberbatch Thinks Johnny Depp Is 'Spooky'

Johnny Depp is almost unrecognisable in his new film, playing Boston's most notorious gangster Whitey Bulger.

The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' star has disappeared behind pale contact lenses, terrible hair and an almighty 'spam' (that's an extensive forehead for the uninitiated) for his latest role in 'Black Mass', which has already garnered better reviews than anything else the mercurial A-lister has done recently.

"There's something really special going on," says Benedict Cumberbatch of his co-star's transformation. "It's a really spooky thing to work with, because of the incredible work that is Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger. It's fantastic."

Johnny Depp plays Whitey Bulger in the true-life story of the Boston gangster

The film depicts the true story of Whitey Bulger, a prominent leader of organized crime in South Boston. Whitey is the brother of Massachusetts State Senator William "Billy" Bulger, played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Following a string of violent acts, he becomes an FBI informant for 30 years in order to take down a Mafia family invading his turf. The film focuses on the period of the late 1970s and early 1980s, as Whitey was solidifying his position as leader of the Irish-American Winter Hill Gang.

'Black Mass' is in UK cinemas from 27 November.
